Most Common Diseases Affecting Local Tree Species in Florida

Routine Assessments Can Detect Emerging Disease

Florida's warm, humid climate allows many fungal diseases to thrive that can infect trees and cause severe damage or death if left unchecked. Here are some of the most common tree diseases found across the state that property owners should be aware of:

Laurel Wilt Disease

Laurel wilt affects avocado, redbay, and other trees in the Lauraceae plant family. It is caused by a fungus carried by the invasive redbay ambrosia beetle. Symptoms include wilting leaves, dying branches, and eventually death. There is no cure once infected.

Ganoderma Butt Rot

This fungal rot attacks palms and other trees at the base near the soil line. It causes extensive decay and structural weakening, making the palm prone to snapping or blowing over during storms. Preventative treatment can help high value or high hazard palms.

Armillaria Root Rot

Also called mushroom root rot, this fungal disease impacts the roots of oak, citrus, and other species. Infected trees exhibit slowed growth, yellowing leaves, dieback, and mushrooms near the trunk. It eventually leads to death.

Fusarium / Canker

A widespread issue in Florida, fusarium attacks the vascular system of many trees. It chokes off water and nutrient transport, causing canopy thinning and dieback. Oak species are especially susceptible. Keeping trees healthy helps prevent infections.

Phytophthora

This disease causes root rot in many shade and fruit trees. Fine feeder roots die off, leaving trees stunted and stressed. Palm species are also affected, with spear leaf blight being a common symptom. Good drainage and sanitation helps curb spread.

Thielaviopsis Decline

Seen in date palms and sometimes queen palms, this disease leads to a slow, spreading decline. Affected palms show leaf yellowing, defoliation, and collapse of the canopy. Confirming the disease early provides the best chance for successful treatment.

Routine assessments by a certified arborist can detect issues early while treatment is most effective. Keeping your trees healthy through proper care and management is key to avoiding devastating diseases. Contact us today if you need an evaluation of tree diseases on your Florida property.
